Because shoes are bolted on rather than welded or forged into the link, they can often be replaced independently of the links themselves. That distinction matters a lot for repair cost. How Wear Happens and Why Peak Season Accelerates It

Two different wear mechanisms are at work on a track chain, and it helps to think of them separately. Warning Signs You Need Replacement Links or Shoes

Chain pitch elongation beyond spec is the core failure to watch for. A track that sags more than normal even after a proper re-tensioning, or that measures beyond the OEM's stated wear limit when checked, has chain stretch that tensioning alone can't fix anymore.

Sprocket symptoms often show up alongside chain stretch. Once the pitch has grown enough, the chain no longer seats cleanly on the sprocket teeth, and it starts to climb or skip instead. That's a sign the two components are now mismatched in wear, and it's worth having both inspected together rather than assuming it's a sprocket problem alone.

Visibly worn or rounded grouser edges are the shoe-side equivalent. A grouser that's lost its sharp profile no longer bites into the ground the way a new one does, and the loss of traction tends to show up first on slopes or soft ground before it's obvious anywhere else.

Loose, missing, or sheared shoe bolts deserve immediate attention rather than a wait-and-see approach. A shoe that works loose under load can cause damage well beyond the cost of the bolt itself, so this is worth treating as an inspection priority every time.

Uneven wear from one side of the track to the other, or from link to link, is worth noting before it becomes a functional problem.
