Walk-Around Inspection
Walking up to your machine first thing is a great time to perform a walk-around inspection.
- Open the engine hood and covers to check for combustible materials around the engine and battery and liquid leakage around the engine and hydraulic devices.
- Inspect the exterior of the machine for any damaged components. A few components to keep an eye out for are the lights, attachments, hoses, bucket, bucket teeth, hook, slip stopper, hook mount, handrail, crawler, shoe slide, track roller, idler, canopy, and cab.
- While sitting in the operator's seat, make sure to check the windshield, seat, seat belt, monitor, instruments and switches for damage and address any damaged, dirty or worn parts before operating the machine.
Daily Inspection
Manufacturers recommend a 10-hour inspection to check your machine daily, and a great time to do so is first thing in the morning.
- Make sure to check the coolant level in the reserve tank and refill if needed.
- Pull out the dipstick and check your oil levels as well, making sure to wipe down the dipstick with a clean rag before replacing it.
- Check the dust indicator by making sure the red piston is not sticking out of the dust indicator.
- Inspect the water separator to see if the red indicator ring is floating to indicate that it needs to be cleaned after the water is drained.
- Make sure to check if your fuel levels are low and add fuel to the fuel port while watching the sight gauge.
- Inspect the hydraulic oil level using the sight gauge and remember that the level will fluctuate depending on the temperature, but replenish if necessary.
- Lubricate grease nipples with a grease gun taking care to wipe off expelled grease.
50 Hour Maintenance
Every 50 hours, or approximately once a week, Takeuchi recommends another round of inspections for your machine.
- Inspect and adjust the crawler tension to make sure the gaps between the bottom surface of the frame and and the top of the surface crawler with different ranges for rubber or steel crawlers.
- Check the lubrication on the slew bearing, using a grease gun to lubricate the grease nipple.
- Check the slew motor pinion to make sure the grease nipple is properly lubricated as well.
- Inspect the battery fluid level: blue is good, white means charging is needed and red means there isn’t enough battery fluid
- Drain the fluid tank, taking care to make sure there are no open flames while handling fuel
100 Hour Maintenance
Every 100 hours, you’ll need to clean the Fuel Filter and Water Separator.
- While cleaning the fuel filter, make sure to check the O-Ring and bleed air from the system.
- While cleaning the Water Separator, make sure to also check the O-Ring for damage and bleed air from the system.
250 Hour Maintenance
Every 250 hours is your first detailed machine maintenance that requires a round of filter changes.
- Inspect and adjust the fan belt.
- Replace the engine oil and oil filter.
- Clean the air filter by using compressed dried air blowing air from the inside the element along the flutes. You can also use a light source on the inside of the filter to inspect for holes or thin spots in the element.
- Clean the radiator fins and oil cooler fins using compressed air to remove dirt and mud.
- Replace the hydraulic oil return filter.
- Replace the fuel filter and make sure to bleed any excess air.
1,000 Hour Maintenance
The largest maintenance undertaking is at the 1,000 hour marker, which typically happens once a year but can occur more often depending on your machine use.
- Clean the engine cooling system, making sure to clean repeatedly until the drained water runs clear.
- Replace the air cleaner element, which needs to be replaced every 1,000 hours or every three cleaning of the outer air element.
- Replace the travel motor gear oil.
- Inspect and adjust the engine valve clearance.
- Retighten the engine cylinder head bolts.
- Inspect the engine fuel injection pressure and spray condition.
2,000 Hour Maintenance
In addition to the normal 1,000 hour maintenance, at 2,000 hours make sure to check on the following:
- Replace the hydraulic oil and clean the suction strainer, make sure to have a drain pan ready to catch spent oil under the drain plug.
- Inspect the engine fuel and injection timing.
- Inspect the engine fuel injection valve.
