Preventive maintenance is one of the best ways to lower maintenance costs. A good preventive maintenance strategy involves regularly scheduled inspections to ensure that your machine’s mechanical components, hydraulics and electrical system are working properly.

Component failures frequently set off chain reactions and the failure of a single component can lead to system-wide failures. 

By inspecting your machines regularly and thoroughly, you can prevent costly system-wide failures and keep your machines out of the service yard.

Safety components like lights, horns, locks, alarms, pedals and fire extinguishers all need to be monitored and replaced, if needed.

By monitoring and maintaining your machine’s safety equipment, you can avoid unnecessary accidents. When accidents do occur, you will be able to show that you were not negligent. You took the necessary steps to inspect and maintain the safety features of equipment in your fleet.

When crafting a preventive maintenance plan, it’s difficult to know where to begin. Different machines have various maintenance requirements, and it isn’t easy to create a plan that addresses the needs of your entire fleet in a unified strategy.


  • Consult Operation Manuals: Your machine’s operation manual should contain a preventive maintenance section. In this section, you’ll find the maintenance tasks that need to be performed for your machine and the maintenance interval for each task. This is the best place to start when creating a preventive maintenance plan.
  • Consider Operating Conditions: Be sure to adjust your preventive maintenance plan in accordance with weather and operating conditions. Operating your heavy equipment in cold weather means your tires may lose pressure more quickly; abrasive terrain will wear down your attachments. You may need to make slight alterations to your maintenance plan to account for such circumstances.
  • Address Issues Immediately: When an issue is discovered during a routine inspection, such as a warning light, make sure the issue is addressed immediately. Train your operators to contact their supervisor when an issue needs extra attention. Allowing equipment to be used on failing or loose components could lead to system-wide failures, which result in downtime.
  • Rely on Your Operators: When it comes to preventive maintenance, your operators are the key to a successful strategy. Operators who know their machines well can often feel something is wrong with their equipment long before issues are discovered through inspection. Train your operators to pay attention and report irregular warning lights, noises, vibrations or other issues they observe while operating their machines.
